Last month, Amar Seafood and Otter Ferry Seafish had the pleasure of hosting a dedicated Halibut Workshop in Kilfinan, bringing together key players from the halibut aquaculture industry. With participants joining from across Europe and Canada, the workshop marked a significant step forward for collaboration and knowledge-sharing in this growing sector.
The goal was clear: to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for halibut farming — and how the industry can evolve together. Through breakout sessions, presentations and active discussions, several key themes emerged, including market development, technological innovation, and health and nutrition.
Topics such as brand positioning, site availability, feed cost, and disease prevention were thoroughly explored. The group identified both short-term actions and long-term goals to help support the sustainable growth of farmed halibut. There was also a clear wish to continue this important conversation, with several attendees suggesting the formation of an informal producer network to drive initiatives forward.
We want to extend our warm thanks to everyone who helped make the event such a success. Special thanks go to AgriTech UK for their contributions to the program and facilitation of the workshop, and to SAIC for supporting the invitation and registration process. We’re also grateful to the feed manufacturers and halibut producers who generously sponsored the refreshments. And not least, our sincere thanks to the Kilfinan Hotel team for their outstanding hospitality and for providing a welcoming setting for constructive discussions and networking.
To everyone who joined us in person or sent their regards from afar, thank you for being part of this important industry gathering. We hope this workshop was only the beginning of something much larger for farmed halibut — and we look forward to seeing where the road leads next.
The Fish Farmer Magazine featured our workshop in the latest issue of the magazine, pp. 46-49, read it here.
